Why This Reference Exists
Printed Trenton directories are historical sources, while current information is held in separate systems. The City Division of Assessment maintains tax maps and records property changes, the Mercer County Clerk keeps recorded land records, and the County's election offices handle voter-file requests under New Jersey rules. Trentoniana preserves the local directory shelf, telephone books, maps, newspapers, and census microfilm. The purpose of this reference is to make the proper custodian and access route easier to identify before a search begins.
What the Reference Includes
- Search paths by question: the street records route for an address, city directories for historic households, and the resident lookup route for a one-person record trail
- Custodian details: City assessment and clerk offices, the Mercer Clerk, court and election routes, vital-record custodians, and Trentoniana
- Research methods: reading an older directory entry, comparing nearby years, checking an address on a map, and tracing a household across decades
- Access limits: New Jersey Open Public Records Act procedures, restricted records, and the request alternatives available when no public online index exists
Limits of This Service
This is a privately operated reference site, not a Trenton office, Mercer County department, New Jersey agency, court, archive, or library. Important limits include:
- We cannot verify that a particular person currently lives in Trenton
- We cannot retrieve, certify, amend, or correct a custodian's record for you
- We cannot place a person on, or remove a person from, a government roll or database
- We cannot advise on legal rights, title questions, or record disputes
- We cannot guarantee that every office detail, coverage range, or outside link remains current
The office that holds a record is the only source that can confirm, certify, or correct it. This reference is not a consumer reporting agency and may not be used for any FCRA-regulated purpose.
